Over at Songfight it’s Nur Ein season. It’s kind of like March Madness, but less sweaty. Every week there’s a title and a special challenge and participants submit songs to be judged by an expert panel. Bottom scores get booted. Songwriting is a cutthroat pastime. I competed last year and got ousted in round 1 (there’s a round 0, too, but usually everyone passes through it). The title for this year’s Round 0 is “Standing on the Edge”. Fighters also have to include a self reference.
Here’s my submission. It’s a sweet and airy arrangement with a very morbid theme, but don’t worry, I’m doing alright. Somewhere in the middle of writing it I was reminded of a near death(ish) experience where I almost drowned in the Aegean Sea, but got saved by a very hairy European man. I couldn’t figure out how to work him into the song, so I died.
I’m more or less happy with the result. It’s the longest composed song I can remember recording. Lots of mellow, warm sounds, cool melodies and musical moments. There’re also some extremely questionably pitched notes, occasionally overdriven vocals and a few rhythmic flubs (I need to fire my drummer!). But for a rough recording, it gets the idea across nicely.
